City Council approves Number One George Square advertisingThe former Glasgow
GPO building is set to make a real statement after planning permission was granted
for state-of-the-art advertising screens to be positioned on the property during
regeneration of the site. AWG Property and HF Developments are behind the project
to deliver the 127,000 sq ft office development, Number One George Square. Glasgow
City Council have approved AWG Property / HF Developments’ plans for three
advertising hoardings to cover the building during construction. In addition two
impressive digital LED screens (7m wide and 10m tall) which will show moving advertisements
which will be positioned at each corner of the property overlooking George Square.
The banner facing George Square will measure 54.8m wide x 13.9m high and will
cover the majority of the frontage of the A-listed Victorian building while the
necessary redevelopment work continues over the next 2 years. The AWG Property
/ HF Developments joint venture bought the property from Stefan King’s G1
Group in excess of £11 million in November of last year. Once completed,
the development could lure as many as 1200 new jobs to the city centre. The façade
of the 125-year-old building will be retained while a striking glass roof extension
will be created. Stephen Kelly, director of AWG Property said: “Number
One George Square occupies one of the most prominent sites in Glasgow and work
has already started on creating an iconic office development. “However,
there won’t be much to see until the project is nearing completion, so it’s
appropriate we provide adequate screening. “We’re delighted
this site will play host to such innovative and eye-catching advertising, as it
keeps the development in the public eye during the whole of the construction period.” William
Hill, managing director of HF Developments, added: “We are in talks with
the top brands and we’re confident the major players will be interested
in seeing their products advertised on such a high profile site. “It’s
fitting that such an innovative development will have such inventive advertising
during the construction period. “Everyone in Glasgow has a desire
to see this property brought back into use again following so many years of lying
vacant and work is already progressing well.” The distinctive frontage
of the building will be retained in front of a modern, desirable and employee-friendly
office development. Potential occupiers have already started enquiring about
locating to the site and it offers the ideal location for a single occupier’s
corporate or Scottish HQ. The proposed refurbishment and extension of the
former post office building will help to reactivate the southern corner of the
Square. The development is expected to have an end development value in excess
of £70 million. |
