a population of almost 600,000, Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and sits
at the heart of a conurbation of 1.75 million people. Almost half of Scotland’s
population look to the city as the key place for shopping and leisure. One
of Europe’s top 20 locations for financial services, more than 750 banks,
insurers and other financial players have a presence in the city. The city’s
International Financial Services District offers high bandwith and security of
energy supply. Glasgow also boasts the UK’s best retail facilities
outside of London, including world class fashion stores jostling for space on
Buchanan Street – one of the UK’s premier retail locations. Leisure,
tourism, conferences, exhibitions, the arts and sport are the other great generators
of the city’s wealth. More than 80 per cent of the working population is
engaged in the services sector. Rated highly as a business location, Greater
Glasgow contains four universities and a wide range of further education colleges,
giving the city one of Europe’s most highly qualified and cost-effective
workforces. | |
Glasgow is the most fantastic world-class city. It
has so much energy and style and its people are some of the friendliest you’ll
find anywhere. Glasgow deserves this accolade because it has worked really hard
at transforming what people might once have perceived as a dour place into one
of the most vibrant cultural scenes anywhere in Europe. Sarah
